Glendalough Round Tower

Round towers were the Campaniles of Early lrish Monasteries and were used to summon the monks to prayer. The Glendalough Round tower is 100 feet high and has six floors. The top storey has four windows. and the other upper storeys have one each. The door is almost 12 feet above ground and was presumably reached by means of a movable ladder which those inside could pull up after them to prevent an enemy from entering the tower. This Round Tower was probably built some time between 900 and 1200.

Glendalough Upper Lake - Glendalough Lower Lake - Glenealo River

At the end of the last Ice Age, Glendalough Valley had only one lake. However over the centuries rock and silt washing down the stream caused a delta to form. This eventually stretched across the valley so dividing the lake in two, hence its Irish name Gleann Dá Loch (the glen of the two lakes).

Glendalough Valley - Old Mine Site

The Glendalough Valley was carved out by glaciers during the Ice Age and the two lakes, from which Glendalough gets its name (Irish : Gleann Da Loch, the glen of the two lakes), were formed when the ice eventually thawed.
