Originally the two lighthouses built in January and March 1832 at Dunagree Point, 1 km south of Inishowen Head, were used as harbour lights to guide vessels into Lough Foyle. 

Initialement les deux phares construits en janvier et mars 1832 sur la pointe de Dunagree, à 1 km au sud de la pointe d'Inishowen, ont été utilisés comme feux d'approche pour guider les navires dans l'estuaire de la rivière Foyle.
