Northern Ireland - Co. Antrim - Dunluce Castle

In the 1200s Richard de Burgh, Earl of Ulster, built the first castle at Dunluce. The earliest features of the castle are two large drum towers about 9 metres in diameter on the eastern side, both relics of a stronghold built here by the McQuillans after they became lords of the district in the late fourteenth century. It's best known, however for its long association with the MacDonnell clan, particularly Sorley Boy and his son Randal.

Le premier Château de Dunluce fût construit au XIIIème siècle par Richard de Burgh, comte d'Ulster. Les deux grandess tours que l'on distingue aujourd'hui sur la façade Est sont les vestiges d'une forteresse construite par les McQuillans après ils soient devenus seigneurs de la région à la fin du quatorzième siècle. Cependant, le château de Dunluce est surtout connu au travers de la période où il fut occupé par le clan MacDonnell, en particulier par Sorley Boy et son fils Randal.
