Wicklow Head Lighthouse
N 52°57.947' - W 005°59.889'

Three lighthouses, two on Long Hill, the other on the saddle of the head, were built by the revenue commissioners to the design of John Trail their
engineer. The two lights were established on 1st September 1781. They not only marked the headland but prevented mariners from confusing Wicklow Head with Howth and Hook Head, both of which had single lights. The present lighthouse is the most recent of three towers which stand on the head. On 31st March 1994 the lighthouse was converted to automatic operation and the keepers were withdrawn from the station.

Wicklow Head olg lighthouses

Freestanding six-stage former lighthouse is now use as a holiday home. The 30m (95ft) high structure is constructed in coursed granite with ashlar quoins. The octagonal shaft is slightly tapered. There is a bracketed cornice and a domed cap. Internally there is a replacement spiral steel stair. The second lighthouse was re-built in 1825. The Irish Landmark Trust (ILT), whose mission is to rescue neglected historic buildings, has transformed the old lighthouse into a kind of coastal show home.

Wicklow Head Coast

This headland marks the most easterly point of County Wicklow. Its cliffs hold a small seabird colony in summer. The seabed offshore, which is swept by strong tidal currents, has an unusual series of reefs formed by honeycomb worms. Sea cliffs, storm beaches, maritime grassland and heathland are the main habitats.
