The site of Blasket Islands sound has a large population of Grey Seals, with approximatly 600 animals counted in a recent survey.. This is one of the largest populations in the country and represents about one-third of the Irish population. The seals breed on boulder beaches and caves on several of the islands .The Blasket Sound is also a particularly good area for cetaceans (whales and dolphins).
