The tower is built of natural stone and was constructed as a famine relief work in 1847. It was built at the same time as Esk Tower on Burnham Hill (Carhoo Hill), as a visual aid to guide ships to the harbour which is not visible from Dingle Bay. The Towereen Bán functioned as a day mark - an unlit visual marker - and was probably painted white, as the name suggests. A natural stone arch formed a bridge between the tower and the cliffs at Reenbeg but that collapsed during a storm in January,1981.
