For two days in August, 1969 local people resisted attemps by the Royal Ulster
Constabulary to break down the barricades which they had erected to defend
their communauty. The battle of the Bogside ended when the British government
sent in the Army. The mural depiects a young boy wearing a gas mask to protect
himself from CS gas : he is holding a petrol bomb made from a milk bottle.
This was our first mural and thought to be our best. As soon as the three of
us (Tom and William Kelly, Kevin Hasson) painted it we knew we had captured something of the spirit of the
Bogside. |

Sur le panneau décrivant la fresque murale :
Pendant deux jours, en août 1969, la population locale a tenté de résister à
l'armée britannique derrière les barricades qu'ils avaient érigées pour
défendre leur communauté. La bataille du quartier de Bogside prit fin lorsque
le gouvernement britannique envoya l'armée. La fresque représente un jeune
garçon portant un masque à gaz pour se protéger du gaz CS et tenant à la main
un cocktail Molotov conçu avec une bouteille de lait.
Cette fresque fut notre première peinture murale et reste la plus appréciée.
Dès que nous nous sommes mis à peindre tous les trois (Tom et William Kelly, Kevin Hasson), nous avons compris que nous saisissions par notre travail l'esprit du Bogside. |
