Dunseverick castle and its rocky peninsula were given to the National Trust in 1962 by farmer Jack Mc Curdy. The term "Dun" (fort) indicates a royal site. This was the fort of Sobhairce. It may have been a royal stronghold in the Iron Age (around 500 B.C.) and traditionaly was one of the great duns of Ireland.

Le Château de Dunseverick et sa péninsule rocheuse ont été légués au National Trust par le fermier Jack Mc Curdy en 1962. Le préfixe "Dun" signifie qu'il s'agit là d'un site royal. Il s'agissait du fort de Sobhairce qui fut sans doute l'une des places fortes du royaume pendant l'age de fer (environ 500 ans av JC)
